With prize money of $100,000, the ARA Historical Novel Prize gives Australian and New Zealand historical novelists the chance to be recognised in a class of their own, with the most significant prize purse for any genre-based prize in Australasia.

An initiative of the Heraldry and Genealogy Society of Canberra (HAGSOC), the competition is an opportunity for family history enthusiasts to share their writing, and is a forum to foster the preservation of family history research through stories.

The prize was created to discover and publish new writing talent. The winner of the prize is offered a publishing contract with Impress books with the aim of publishing the book in the year following the award. The Tasmanian Writers & Readers Festival, run biennially by the Tasmanian Writers Centre, unites writers and readers from across the state and Australia through masterclasses, discussion forums, spoken word events, children’s programs and more. The festival occupies various spaces throughout the historic Hadley’s Orient Hotel and encourages all members of the community to engage with their fellow readers and writers through the power of storytelling.
