A non-profit collecting society that registers, collects and distributes authorship monies from European collecting societies to its members, who are Australian and New Zealand scriptwriters of film and TV. European collecting society monies include European statutory monies for private copying, re-transmission, educational copying, rental, lending, etc. Currently collects money from collecting societies in France, Switzerland, Germany and the UK.
The Writing and Society Research Centre’s members include critics, theorists and philosophers, poets, novelists, experimental writers, translators, editors, performers and composers. The Centre’s core interest is in literature as a form of knowledge, and as an agent for the examination of social and cultural values. We provide a rigorous and active context for our researchers, honours and higher degree candidates.
Barossa Writers is a dedicated group of writers who meet monthly to read and critique members’ work. The group have published several anthologies, hold workshops with guest speakers and run a regular competition for young writers. Members’ interests include, but are not limited to, writing poetry, short stories, family history and children’s stories.
FAW Bayside is a regional branch of the Fellowship of Australian Writers (VIC) Inc. The group meets at 8pm on the third Wednesday of each month. Activities include writing workshops, lectures and all those games that writers love to play. In the past few years, events hosted include a writing competition, radio plays, a literary festival and the production of an anthology of members’ work.
For writers and those interested in promoting writing and reading of Australian literature. Publishes anthologies of group work. Meets first Sunday of the month, 1:45pm-4:45pm, at the Springwood Neighbourhood Centre (please check website to confirm).
Broad Universe is an international organisation of women and men dedicated to celebrating and promoting the work of women writers of science fiction, fantasy and horror. See website for more details.
The Broken Hill Regional Writers Centre fosters writing and literary enjoyment for those living in west NSW.
An active group interested in reading, writing and composing poetry. Organises the Bush Lantern Award and the Bundy Poets Muster. Meetings held every second Saturday of each month at the Rum City Silver Band Hall, Targo Street, Bundaberg at 1:30pm.
A group of 40-50 keen members dedicated to all aspects of creative writing, including plays and poetry. Welcomes isolated writers from all states of Australia as members. Members invited to submit work for critiquing. There is also a monthly newsletter.
Established in 1993 with the intention of building a ‘living arts centre’. Runs an annual Artist-in-Residence program for artists or groups, including writers. Places are organised by application or invitation, and are available for individuals or groups on a project-basis. See website for application details.
The Camden Head Pilot Station honours Australia’s nature writing genre. Its program includes artists-in-residence and an annual children’s competition held in the schools of the Camden Haven.
The Canberra Speculative Fiction Guild (CSFG) helps science fiction, fantasy and horror writers and illustrators develop their craft through critiquing and sharing news and experiences. Meets the first Wednesday of the month for critiquing and the third Wednesday of the month for guild matters at ACT Writers Centre. Check mailing list for details.
Carclew Youth Arts is South Australia’s peak arts body for people aged 26 and under. Carclew Youth Arts’ Board was previously known as the South Australian Youth Arts Board, or SAYAB.
The Coffs Harbour Writers’ Group was established in 1986 for the purpose of creating an environment of support for aspiring writers. The group aims to promote writing in the Coffs Harbour area, to provide positive feedback and suggestions to members, improve members’ skills, and provide a portal of information on writing competitions and publishing opportunities.
Crime Writers’ Association of Australia was formed to promote and publicise Australian crime fiction and to organise the annual Ned Kelly Awards for excellence in crime writing.
Formerly Brown’s Mart Community Arts, Darwin Community Arts is an organisation inspired and animated by artists and communities. Because of its strong community connection, it reflects the prolific, vibrant and multicultural nature of the Northern Territory. Darwin Community Arts initiates projects and responds to ideas and requests from the community.
Down South Writer’s Centre is concerned with the promotion of literature and creative writing in Busselton and region.
The Eastwood Hills FAW is open to anyone with an interest in writing, whether it be prose, poetry, articles or other forms. FAW’s aim is to foster creativity through critique sessions, workshops, guest speakers etc, in a friendly, non-threatening atmosphere. Annual competition for short story and poetry.
Editors Victoria is Australia’s oldest and largest association for professional editors. It provides opportunities for professional development, and aims to establish and maintain high standards of editing while advocating for member and associate-member editors. Educational Lending Right (ELR) operates as an Administrative Scheme and is administered by the Government Office for the Arts. ELR makes payments to eligible Australian creators and publishers on the basis that income is lost from the availability of their books in educational libraries (school, TAFE and university libraries). ELR also supports the enrichment of Australian culture by encouraging the growth and development of Australian writing and publishing.
The Fellowship of Australian Writers (FAW) is a subscription based, non-profit organisation for writers of all ages and levels of ability. Members receive ‘The Australian Writers’ magazine, writing advice and the opportunity to enter FAW’s National Literary Awards, conducted each year. Members have access to readings and workshops where they can get feedback on their work through our network of regional branches.
Groups aim to support, inspire and inform. Writing Group meets the first Wednesday of the month at 1pm, Poetry meet the same time on the third Wednesday.
The Friendly Street Poets Inc. organisation is a voluntary, artistic, egalitarian, inclusive, supportive and welcoming community of poets. FSP encourages the development of SA poets and poetry by providing live performance and publishing opportunities. FSP publishes an annual anthology, launched at Writers’ Week during the Adelaide Festival of Arts. Open mic readings are monthly and everyone is welcome to listen or perform.
Geelong Writers is a community-based organisation that aims to encourage writing in all its genres. We conduct a weekly social meeting, a monthly reading and a wide variety of writing workshops. GW publishes a fortnightly e-bulletin, a members’ anthology, and literary journal, Azuria.
Hunter Writers’ Centre organises readings and workshops for readers and writers in the Hunter region. Local writers are encouraged to use the large studio space at the Lock-up for workspace and meetings. The HWC also runs a number of community cultural projects throughout the year, the Newcastle Poetry Prize and a Writer In Residence program.
