Australian Theatre for Young People is a Sydney-based theatre company focussed on the delivery of productions and programs that have a national impact. Young people are at the heart of everything we do and our reputation is founded on creative collaboration between the nation’s leading artists and our members. Bridging the divide between youth theatre and professional practice, we generate work that has the capacity to be studied, restaged, discussed and accessed for generations.
The Writing and Society Research Centre’s members include critics, theorists and philosophers, poets, novelists, experimental writers, translators, editors, performers and composers. The Centre’s core interest is in literature as a form of knowledge, and as an agent for the examination of social and cultural values. We provide a rigorous and active context for our researchers, honours and higher degree candidates.
The Coffs Harbour Writers’ Group was established in 1986 for the purpose of creating an environment of support for aspiring writers. The group aims to promote writing in the Coffs Harbour area, to provide positive feedback and suggestions to members, improve members’ skills, and provide a portal of information on writing competitions and publishing opportunities.
Currency Press is an independent Australian publisher established in 1971, and specialising in the performing arts. The company considers for publication plays that have been professionally produced. We will also consider non-fiction work that relates to the performing arts.
Darlinghurst Theatre Company is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting emerging artists and new Australian and international plays, so they can deliver a season of high quality, diverse and innovative theatre. The works of the Darlinghurst Theatre Company is made possible with assistance from the NSW Government through Arts NSW.
The Ensemble Theatre Company was founded in 1958 by Hayes Gordon. The company presents a 12-month season of plays at its Kirribilli venue and other venues around Sydney. The theatre programs a mix of Australian and international work, as well as presenting new works and classics. The Ensemble Theatre is Australia’s longest, continuously running professional theatre company and has constantly maintained the highest standards in theatrical presentation.
The resident theatre company of the historic SBW Stables Theatre in Kings Cross, Griffin Theatre Company dedicates itself to the nurture, presentation and promotion of outstanding Australian playwriting and contemporary theatre. Provides an atmosphere of sharing and support as writers hone their craft. Program includes workshops, speakers, hands-on writing, feedback, social activities and more. Has a strong mentoring program for inexperienced writers. Meets first Saturday of month at 2pm.
Live Poets is a performing venue for writers, musicians and storytellers. Meets on the 4th Wednesday of every month from February to November. We feature special guests in poetry and unplugged music. We also welcome in our open section anyone who wants to recite, sing, tell a story, or play an instrument. Published eight books of poetry under Live Poets’ Press Imprint.
The Macarthur regional branch of NSW FAW. Meets every third Sunday of the month at 1.00 pm, Campbelltown RSL Club (Jade Room), Carberry Lane (corner Cordeaux Street).

Port Macquarie-Hastings FAW is the regional branch of NSW FAW and meets on the last Saturday afternoon of each month at 1pm. Meetings are varied and include speakers, outings and workshops by local and non-local writers, and readings of members work. Two literary competitions are held annually. Have established a fortnightly writing group for members. New members and visitors to the Hastings area are very welcome to attend meetings.
The SCREENPLAY Development Centre has been created because of a simple need: the need to find commercially viable screenplays. By creating a central screenplay submission centre and the Screenplay Notification Service™, we’re saving the writer the costs of multiple submissions and negative Coverage, while simultaneously saving the production companies the costs of redundant reader services.
Shopfront is an exciting and innovative arts centre – focused on contemporary performance, hybrid arts and cross-disciplinary forms. It’s a one stop creative haven where under 25s make engaging new work and meaningful connections.
The group meets every week to workshop each others’ writing and to discuss and analyse prominent writers’ work. Meets at Sutherland Entertainment Centre, Eaton Street, Sutherland (during school terms, Mondays 10am-12pm).
Sydney Theatre Company has been a major force in Australian drama since its establishment in 1978. As the state theatre of NSW, the Sydney Theatre Company offers Sydney audiences an eclectic program of Australian plays, lively interpretations of the classic repertoire and the best of new international writing. It seeks to produce theatre of the highest standard that consistently illuminates, entertains and challenges.
The group meets once a month and enjoys reading poetry. It runs the Blackened Billy Verse Competition for written verse.
Wollondilly FAW is a regional branch of the NSW FAW and meets on the second Sunday of every month. The group is very active, holding an annual literary competition and an annual poets picnic at Wirrimbirra Sanctuary.
The Women Writers Network meets to workshop and edit works in progress from all genres. Meetings are held on Wednesdays at 1pm at the NSW Writers’ Centre. Must be a NSWWC member to attend.
Youngstreet Poets meets on the fourth Friday of the month at the NSW Writer’s Centre, Rozelle. By invitation only.
Arts Law is the national legal centre for the arts. We provide practical legal advice and more to artists across all sectors. Legal advice is free or low-cost depending on enquiry. Sample agreements, checklists, guides and information sheets, are sold or available on our website. We present workshops and seminars on key legal issues impacting on creative practice and play a key advocacy role regarding issues facing Australian artists.
Australasian Medical Writers Association (AMWA) members include: writers and editors, freelancers, medical practitioners and those working in public relations, medical communications and the pharmaceutical industry. AMWA offers a website, freelance register, e-newsletter, email service, an annual conference, annual AMWA Award, and a Professional Development Program. AMWA keeps members informed and provides networking and education opportunities.
Australia Council for the Arts is the Federal Government arts advisory and funding body. New Work, Publishing and Residencies and Fellowship categories offer grants to published Australian writers. Accepts projects in these genres: fiction (adult, young adult and children), literary non-fiction, poetry and writing for stage, radio and new media.
