Senior Editor for IP Pty Ltd, Lauren Daniels has served annually as a literary contest judge since ’05. She holds a BA and MFA in Creative Writing and offers 20+ years international experience in publishing, mentoring, manuscript appraisal and editing for fiction and non-fiction. In Australia and the US, Lauren has delivered writing workshops with universities, corporations and outreach programs. She is the editor for 40+ Australian titles and has a published track record of her own starting in 1987.
Due to the Cassowary Coast being such a spread out community the meetings take place in a cafe in the north of the region (Innisfail) and on alternate months a cafe in the south of the region (Mission Beach) so all members share travel distance. Our Group’s purpose is to support writers of any genre; we critique, share, workshop and enjoy each other’s work and get involved in community events.
We have a set assignment which is completed beforehand to be read out at the meeting. Our group inspires and mentors those writers wishing to complete a project and for this, we meet on the third Monday of the month. We welcome new and emerging writers from Macleay Island.

The Guild aims to promote storytelling in communities by bringing together people from all sections of the community to share experiences and stories. Following in the footsteps of literary tradition, Storyfest is the writers’ festival for the Gold Coast, the cornerstone of which is its annual three day event held in March. Delivering a series of literary experiences along with workshops, masterclasses and featured authors throughout the year, Storyfest nurtures emerging writers and provides opportunities for readers and writers alike.
The Springfield Writers Group was formed to bring together local writers for support and fellowship. The group accepts writers from beginners to established professional writers, and there is no restriction on genre. The group’s goal is to inspire, to support and share, and to develop a network of writing friends. The Young Writers Award is an annual short story competition for Queensland residents aged 18 to 25 for stories up to 2,500 words, to encourages and support promising Queensland writers. The Young Writers Award is supported by Griffith Review and Queensland Writers Centre.
The Somerset National Novella Writing Competition is offered by Somerset College and is part of its Celebration of Literature Festival. Competition open to all Australian secondary students. Entrants must be under 19 years of age at close of entries. Required word length is 10,000 to 20,000 words. See website for further details.

We meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the School of Arts, and on the third Wednesday at the Botanic Gardens down by Murray Lagoon. We also run a poetry group on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, both times at the School of Arts. Both are open to new members.

Brisbane’s oldest speculative fiction writers group, Vision writers was founded by Marianne de Pierres and Rowena Cory Daniells in 1996. The group’s primary goal is the critiquing of fiction with the intent of improving not only the piece in question but also honing the writer’s talent as well. We love new members! Anyone from Brisbane and its surrounding area can join (we have members from the Redlands and Ipswich as well – if you’re willing to trek to the meeting we’re happy to have you).
The Youth Literature Festival brings some of the finest writers and performers for young people to Queensland’s Sunshine Coast each year. It features writers’ panels, book-talks, storytelling, workshops and performance and aims to provide a diverse cultural experience for its regional participants.
