The Writing and Society Research Centre’s members include critics, theorists and philosophers, poets, novelists, experimental writers, translators, editors, performers and composers. The Centre’s core interest is in literature as a form of knowledge, and as an agent for the examination of social and cultural values. We provide a rigorous and active context for our researchers, honours and higher degree candidates.
FAW Bayside is a regional branch of the Fellowship of Australian Writers (VIC) Inc. The group meets at 8pm on the third Wednesday of each month. Activities include writing workshops, lectures and all those games that writers love to play. In the past few years, events hosted include a writing competition, radio plays, a literary festival and the production of an anthology of members’ work.
Black Swan is Western Australia’s State Flagship Theatre Company, and one of Australia’s foremost producers of Australian drama. It has developed a reputation for innovation and the nurturing of new work, and in particular the telling of uniquely Western Australian stories.
Canberra Youth Theatre (CYT) was established in 1972 and is a nationally recognised not-for-profit youth arts company which creates and promotes theatre with young people that is inspirational, enriching, collaborative and innovative.
The Coffs Harbour Writers’ Group was established in 1986 for the purpose of creating an environment of support for aspiring writers. The group aims to promote writing in the Coffs Harbour area, to provide positive feedback and suggestions to members, improve members’ skills, and provide a portal of information on writing competitions and publishing opportunities.
Corrugated Iron Youth Arts (CIYA) provides and facilitates quality performing arts experiences for Darwin’s young people. CIYA provides skills development workshops and performance opportunities across artforms for three to 26 year olds throughout the Darwin area. Currency Press is an independent Australian publisher established in 1971, and specialising in the performing arts. The company considers for publication plays that have been professionally produced. We will also consider non-fiction work that relates to the performing arts.
Darlinghurst Theatre Company is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting emerging artists and new Australian and international plays, so they can deliver a season of high quality, diverse and innovative theatre. Editors Victoria is Australia’s oldest and largest association for professional editors. It provides opportunities for professional development, and aims to establish and maintain high standards of editing while advocating for member and associate-member editors. The Ensemble Theatre Company was founded in 1958 by Hayes Gordon. The company presents a 12-month season of plays at its Kirribilli venue and other venues around Sydney. The theatre programs a mix of Australian and international work, as well as presenting new works and classics. The Ensemble Theatre is Australia’s longest, continuously running professional theatre company and has constantly maintained the highest standards in theatrical presentation.
The Fellowship of Australian Writers (FAW) is a subscription based, non-profit organisation for writers of all ages and levels of ability. Members receive ‘The Australian Writers’ magazine, writing advice and the opportunity to enter FAW’s National Literary Awards, conducted each year. Members have access to readings and workshops where they can get feedback on their work through our network of regional branches.

Tropic Sun Theatre was founded by Jean-Pierre Voos in 1986. The main purpose of Tropic Sun was to offer senior students and graduates of the Performing Arts Course at JCU opportunities to present theatre at a professional standard and to meet a variety of critical audiences through touring. Based in Albury-Wodonga (on the NSW/Victorian border), HotHouse Theatre offers an annual subscription season of 5 or more new works at its performance home (The Butter Factory Theatre, Wodonga), tours regionally and nationally, operates a Drama School and technical theatre training program for young people, commissions leading Australian playwrights, and runs the national artist residency program, A Month in the Country.

The Katherine Region of Writers was established in 1991. With eight anthologies published, this non-profit community group meet monthly to share their writing, assist with manuscripts, old and new writing and encourage beginners and everyone in between to get their thoughts and ideas down. Everyone is welcome regardless of their genre or level of writing.
La Mama is currently one of Melbourne’s oldest and most relevant theatres. It was founded in 1967 by the visionary Betty Burstall after she visited and was inspired by New York’s performing arts scene. Built in 1883, La Mama’s tiny stage and intimate spaces break down many of the traditional barriers created between audience and performer, and continues to nurture the new, vital and unconventional whilst maintaining a strong focus on staging local works.
Provides an atmosphere of sharing and support as writers hone their craft. Program includes workshops, speakers, hands-on writing, feedback, social activities and more. Has a strong mentoring program for inexperienced writers. Meets first Saturday of month at 2pm.
Meets monthly, mostly at Belgrave Regional Library. Meetings focus on workshopping and celebrating members’ writing activities and achievements. Holds annual professional development workshops (open to invited participants) and writing retreats. Main aim is to support, motivate and celebrate each other’s writing aspirations. Live Poets is a performing venue for writers, musicians and storytellers. Meets on the 4th Wednesday of every month from February to November. We feature special guests in poetry and unplugged music. We also welcome in our open section anyone who wants to recite, sing, tell a story, or play an instrument. Published eight books of poetry under Live Poets’ Press Imprint.
