Melbourne Poets Union (MPU) was born at Trades Hall in 1977 to promote poetry within the community. It focuses on providing a supportive and encouraging environment for members to read publicly and be inspired through excellent features at monthly meetings. MPU provides opportunities for development and education through its workshop program and newsletter (POAM), and hosts a major annual national poetry competition.

Madonna is a magazine of prayer and spirituality, which aims to help people find God in their everyday lives. Madonna has, at its core, reflections on each day’s scripture readings.
Meets monthly, mostly at Belgrave Regional Library. Meetings focus on workshopping and celebrating members’ writing activities and achievements. Holds annual professional development workshops (open to invited participants) and writing retreats. Main aim is to support, motivate and celebrate each other’s writing aspirations. La Mama is currently one of Melbourne’s oldest and most relevant theatres. It was founded in 1967 by the visionary Betty Burstall after she visited and was inspired by New York’s performing arts scene. Built in 1883, La Mama’s tiny stage and intimate spaces break down many of the traditional barriers created between audience and performer, and continues to nurture the new, vital and unconventional whilst maintaining a strong focus on staging local works.

The Grace Marion Wilson Emerging Writers Competition has helped identify a new generation of Victoria’s writers. The annual fiction and creative non-fiction prizes are open to writers with no more than three stories or articles published in a recognised book, magazine or journal. Open to residents of Victoria only.
